Boavista
the island of dunes

It is the easternmost of the islands and the closest to the African continent.

Despite the very rapid tourist development of recent years, Boavista is still, for the most part, unspoilt with endless dune beaches, fascinating palm groves and stone deserts.

It is the home of Morna; it seems that this musical genre, certainly the most popular on the islands, was born here.

Highlights

Santa Monica Beach

The most beautiful beach: the crystal clear sea creates a splendid contrast with a tongue of fine white sand that stretches as far as the eye can see for more than 18 km.

Desert of Viana

The small but impressive desert of Boavista is located in the north of the island and can be reached through stony, dusty terrain.

Povoação Velha

Ancient village at the foot of the mountain known as Rocha Estancia, which was the capital of the island until 1810.

Praia de Varandinha

White beach located between rocks, deeply suggestive.

Curral Velho

A charming village, now abandoned, with traditional fishermen’s houses standing a few steps away from the old salt pans.

Best time to go

Due to the relief, the climate is particularly humid with temperatures ranging between 16 and 26 degrees, depending on the altitude. The coldest months are from December to April.
