The easternmost of the ‘windward’ group of islands, known to sportspeople all over the world.

Its small size (it is about 30 km long, with a width of 3 to 12 km) and its peculiar morphology (flat and sandy in the south, mostly rocky but with moderate elevations in the north) make it a very easy island to explore.

It owes its name to the natural salt pans of Pedra de Lume, which made its fortune in the past and still supply the inhabitants with this precious raw material today.

Ponta Petra beach

The most beautiful on the island, characterised by a wide shoreline and soft white sand.

Pedra de Lume salt pans

Natural salt pans of volcanic origin located in the middle of the arid Terra Boa desert, in the crater of an extinct volcano.

Espargos

Capital of the island where most of the locals live.

Burracona and Olho Azul

Atmospheric natural pool where the waves crash powerfully against the rocks.

Not far away is a deep cave where it is possible to see the ‘Olho Azul’, a unique spectacle created by the sun’s rays when the sun is at its zenith.

Murdeira

Landscape a few kilometres from Santa Maria, made up of volcanic rocks.

From afar one can admire ‘Monte Leone’, which depicts the image of a lion lying down.

Desert of terra Boa

Landscape characterised by light-coloured sand mixed with grains of black earth.

In the middle of the desert, when the sun is at its highest, you will seem to glimpse a lake of water in the distance that does not exist (mirage).

Palmeira

The most authentic place in Sal in the north-west: a fishing village with a pretty harbour and a charming bay.

Best time to go

The climate is dry for most of the year and rainfall, although rare, is concentrated in August and September until mid-October. The windiest months are from November to April and the coolest from January to February.
