Santo Antão
the greenest island

It is part of the Barlavento Islands and is the northernmost one.

The second largest island in the archipelago, it is the only truly green island in Cape Verde. Reaching it by ferry, one does not suspect how lush it is, as the southern part is rather barren. But the north-eastern part, the most populated corner and most frequented by hikers, is so humid that the hilltops are cloaked in pine forests and tropical plants flourish in the warmer valleys.

The few cars present make it a particularly environmentally friendly destination.

Highlights

Paul Valley

Very green valley, rich in sugar cane and coffee plantations (the most famous grogue in all of Cape Verde is produced here). It is an ideal place to stay and the starting point of the most interesting trekking routes.

Cova

Crater of an ancient volcano that has been well preserved and is now used
by the population for growing fruit and vegetables.

Fontainhas

One of the most charming villages in Cape Verde, located in the northern part of the island. Perched on the edge of a rock, it resembles a living nativity scene.

Tarrafal de Monte Trigo

Small village located in the extreme south-west of the island and only accessible via a rocky dirt road.

What makes it special is the picturesque bay and the wide black sandy beach.

The village, inhabited by fishermen and farmers, is nestled in an oasis of palm trees and is surrounded by large breadfruit trees, mangoes and papayas.

Xoxo

On arrival there is a large stone placed on the edge of the road. Characteristic, very green village with many sugar cane plantations.

Sinagoga

Particularly impressive natural pools in the eastern part of the island.
It is an ideal place to relax, full of charm during sunset.

Best time to go

Favourable climate all year round. The wettest months are August, September until mid-October. The windiest months are from the end of November until mid-April.
