At first glance, São Nicolau reveals a barren and desolate territory, but beyond the three mountain ridges that dominate the landscape lie lush valleys and mountainous peaks, culminating in Monte Gordo – at 1312 m, the highest peak on the island.
The religious centre of Cape Verde, it was built inland to protect its treasures from pirate raids. The narrow streets that wind their way up the hillside and the tiled roofs will remind you of 17th century Portugal. Ribeira Brava’s Carnival celebrations are second only to those of Mindelo.
How to get there:

Ribeira Brava
Tarrafal
A fishing village with a commercial harbour and ferry port.
Its beaches have become known for medicinal sands rich in titanium and iodine, ideal for improving bone and joint problems.
Gordo Mount
The highest peak on the island and a Natural Park that allows you to walk along several paths among conifers, eucalyptus trees and a diverse flora of rare plants.
Carbeirinho
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in the entire archipelago, characterised by a very distinctive ochre colour.
Juncalinho
A beautiful natural pool among the rocks with water that takes on the colours of various shades of green.
Baixo Rocha
Faja Valley
Lush and luxuriant valley near Ribeira Brava.
Ribeira Prata
The best months are from October to April. From May to July, the weather is a little more sultry. August, September and until mid-October are the months with a risk of rain.
