Climbing Pico Grande, the highest peak of Fogo Volcano at 2,829 meters, is an unforgettable adventure that combines challenge, breathtaking landscapes, and a close encounter with nature at its most raw and dramatic. The hike starts from the village of Chã das Caldeiras, nestled inside the volcanic caldera, a place steeped in history and shaped by past eruptions that have carved the island’s striking terrain. The trail winds through rugged volcanic fields, hardened lava flows, steep slopes, and craters, offering a unique insight into the geology of Fogo. Along the way, hikers can admire plants uniquely adapted to the volcanic soil and breathe the crisp, fresh mountain air as the views gradually open up over the valleys below and the distant Atlantic Ocean. Reaching the summit of Pico Grande rewards trekkers with a spectacular 360-degree view, encompassing the caldera, surrounding villages, distant hills, and on clear days, neighboring islands on the horizon. The descent retraces the same path, allowing for a deeper appreciation of the volcanic terrain as the light changes, revealing new perspectives on the striking landscape. This trek requires good physical condition, proper hiking shoes, and plenty of water, and it is highly recommended to be accompanied by an experienced local guide, who can ensure safety, provide accurate directions, and share the natural and cultural history of the area, enriching the experience. Climbing Pico Grande is more than a hike: it is a journey into the primordial nature of Cape Verde, combining adventure, discovery, and unparalleled beauty. Starting at dawn allows hikers to enjoy the cooler morning temperatures, the best lighting for photography, and the full intensity of every moment on this extraordinary volcanic ascent.

HIGHLIGHTS

Start: Chã das Caldeiras (Portela)

The trail starts in the lava fields around Portela, shaped by the eruptions of 1995 and 2014. The first section crosses black volcanic sand and solidified lava flows, gradually ascending towards the main volcanic cone.

Ascent of the Volcanic Cone

After 20–30 minutes, the terrain becomes steeper. The climb is demanding due to the loose volcanic ash and lapilli, where each step sinks slightly.

This section takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on fitness level.

During the ascent, the smaller cone of Pico Pequeno becomes clearly visible, marking the site of the 2014 eruption.

Reaching the Crater Rim (Pico Grande – 2,829 m)

Upon reaching the crater rim, the landscape becomes spectacular:

-A perfectly shaped volcanic crater

-Occasional warm fumaroles

-Expansive views over the caldera and, on clear mornings, the distant Atlantic Ocean

Summit Loop: Pico Grande & Pico Pequeno

The route follows a scenic loop around the crater edge, offering panoramic viewpoints and unique volcanic features.

A short descent brings you closer to Pico Pequeno, where fresh lava formations show the volcano’s recent activity.

This completes the circular section at the top of the climb.

Volcanic Ash Descent

The descent is one of the most memorable parts of the hike: a long gully of fine volcanic sand allows for a fast, soft, and safe descent—almost like sliding down a slope of powdery snow.

This section takes 20–30 minutes.

Return to Portela

The trail crosses the caldera once more, returning to the starting point in Portela and completing the full loop.

Reviews

Climbing to Pico Grande was epic! The ascent pushed me hard—steep slopes, rocky terrain, and shifting sand—but reaching the summit felt like stepping into another world. The views over Fogo and the crater below were absolutely worth every drop of sweat. On the way down, sliding down long sandy stretches added a playful twist. We ended at a local winery tasting goat cheese and wine—what a perfect ending!
