The second most populous island of the archipelago, it has most of its inhabitants in its capital, Mindelo. The territory is prevalaspro, barren and mountainous, with some enchanting beaches and particularly authentic fishing villages.

Mindelo
A late 19th-century town that has remained virtually unchanged to this day, it is considered the cultural and artistic heart of the archipelago.
It is cosmopolitan, lively and fascinating, especially at night, when the city comes alive with music, dancing and artistic events. Beautiful is Laginha beach, located behind the harbour and known for its cocktail bars and the turquoise colour of its waters.
On the opposite side of the bay, towards Monte Cara (a mountain with the curious profile of a human face) is the characteristic beach of Morro Branco.
Baia Das Gatas
A small village located in the north-eastern corner of the island where there is a beautiful natural pool surrounded by rocks. If you are looking for silence and a place to snorkel without danger, this is the ideal place.
In August, during the first night of the full moon, a big music festival with important artists is organised here.
São Pedro
A picturesque fishing village just a stone’s throw from Mindelo. The golden sandy beach is wide and washed by a clear but particularly rough sea. The area is almost always buffeted by strong winds, which is why it is very popular with surfers and kite-surfers.
Monteverde
The highest point on the island and the best hiking trail on the island; one
of the few places covered by lush green vegetation.
Palha Carha
Lunar landscape in which a mixed beach of rock and sand is set against a backdrop of differently coloured mountains: the colour contrast is particularly fascinating. It can only be reached by 4×4 vehicle.
Salamansa
A particularly authentic fishing village in the north-east of the island; an ideal place for long, solitary walks and kite-surfing.
Calhau
Small bay bounded by a very rugged coastline, resulting from the island’s ancient volcanic activity. Typical, colourful little boats provide a picturepostcard backdrop.
The climate is always temperate. The driest and windiest months are from November to May. The wettest months are from August to October.
