Between February and May, the island of Boa Vista, in Cape Verde, transforms into a magical place where the Atlantic Ocean comes alive. During this period, the majestic humpback whales migrate from the cold waters of the North to the warm sanctuary of the Cape Verdean coast, choosing Boa Vista as a safe haven to mate, give birth, and care for their young. The calm and shallow waters surrounding the island offer an ideal environment to observe these ocean giants in their natural habitat, providing an authentic and unforgettable experience for anyone lucky enough to witness it.

The excursion departs from the port of Sal Rei aboard a small boat, accompanied by experienced guides or marine biologists. Before departure, a short briefing is given to explain the whales’ characteristics and behaviors, along with safety and environmental guidelines. During the navigation, which lasts around two to three hours, guests can experience moments of pure wonder: a mother gently swimming alongside her calf, the powerful blow of air announcing the presence of a nearby whale, or a sudden leap breaking the surface of the water in a breathtaking display.

The experience is often enriched by the presence of dolphins and other marine animals that accompany the boat, creating an even more enchanting atmosphere. The guides, with passion and expertise, turn every outing into an opportunity for discovery, sharing fascinating insights about the whales’ lives and the importance of marine conservation. It is an excursion suitable for families, couples, and curious travelers alike—an experience that both excites and inspires a deeper respect for nature.

If you suffer from seasickness, it’s advisable to take a light remedy before departure to fully enjoy the experience.

Whale watching in Boa Vista is more than just a tourist activity—it is a genuine encounter with the wild beauty of nature, a profound connection with the ocean and the life that inhabits it. Watching a humpback whale emerge from the waves, hearing its powerful breath, and witnessing its graceful movements is something that stays with you forever. With CaboverdeGreen, this experience takes on an even deeper meaning: living the magic of the sea in a conscious, respectful, and sustainable way, while celebrating the extraordinary beauty of Cape Verde.
