Tempo de Campo: Um dia com os pastores - São Vicente

This journey offers a unique opportunity to step into the authentic rural life of São Vicente and experience the island from a perspective that few tourists ever see. The day begins with a hotel pick-up in Mindelo at 8:30 AM, and from there, you embark on a scenic 20-minute drive through striking, lunar-like landscapes toward the small village of Calhau. As you travel, the dramatic scenery of rolling hills, sparse vegetation, and volcanic terrain provides a glimpse into the raw beauty of the island, setting the tone for a day of discovery and connection with local traditions.

Upon arrival in Calhau, you will meet a local shepherd who will guide you through his daily routine. You will follow him across the countryside for about four hours, learning how he cares for and manages his flock, observing the rhythms of pastoral life, and gaining insight into a way of living that has remained largely unchanged for generations. Along the way, you will also witness the preparation of Cape Verde’s traditional cheese, a cherished local specialty. This hands-on experience offers not only a chance to see how the cheese is made from start to finish but also to appreciate the skill and dedication involved in maintaining this culinary tradition.

A highlight of the day is a hearty home-cooked lunch prepared by the shepherd’s family, using fresh, local ingredients sourced directly from their land. After lunch, the afternoon is spent leisurely returning to Mindelo, reflecting on the day’s experiences and the insights gained into the culture, nature, and traditions of São Vicente.
