The São Pedro – Farol Dona Amélia Coastal Trek is an unforgettable hiking experience that begins with a comfortable private pick-up from your accommodation in Mindelo, followed by a short scenic drive in a private taxi to the quiet fishing village of São Pedro, where the adventure begins along one of the most iconic coastal trails of São Vicente. This route, known for its dramatic cliffs and turquoise water, follows a well-marked fishermen’s path carved into the rocks, offering spectacular ocean panoramas, sightings of local marine birds, and constant sea breezes that keep the hike fresh and enjoyable. The trail gradually leads you to the historic Farol Dona Amélia, the lighthouse perched majestically above the ocean, a perfect place for rest, photos, and learning about São Vicente’s maritime heritage. The path is mostly stable, gently undulating along the coastline, making it safe and accessible, which is why this experience is considered family-friendly: the distances are moderate, the altitude differences are minimal, there are no technical passages, and the entire walk remains close to sea level, allowing children (from about 8 years old) to enjoy the adventure safely under supervision. Along the way, hikers can admire volcanic rock formations, small hidden coves, traditional fishermen’s shelters, and the crystal clarity of the Atlantic visible all along the route. Conditions are generally excellent throughout the year thanks to the mild climate of São Vicente, but closed shoes, sun protection, water, and a light windbreaker are recommended for all participants. This trekking offers a perfect mix of nature, culture, adventure, and accessibility, making it ideal for couples, families, and photography lovers looking for an immersive coastal experience in Cape Verde

The Legend of the Dona Amélia Lighthouse

People from São Pedro say that the far western cliffs of São Vicente hide an old secret. Long ago, when the Dona Amélia Lighthouse still burned bright every night, the keeper lived there completely alone, watching the endless Atlantic and guiding ships through the dangerous waters.

According to the legend, during storms he would hear soft voices carried by the wind. At first he thought it was the sea echoing in the rocks, but the whispers became clearer, almost calling his name. Fishermen claim he started answering them, believing the voices belonged to drowned sailors who never reached Porto Grande.

One night, after a violent storm, the keeper disappeared. The lighthouse was found empty, the door wide open, the oil lamp still warm. Down below, waves crashed against the black cliffs as always — but no one ever saw him again.

Since then, locals say that on nights when the wind hits the rocks just right, you can still hear those same whispers near the lighthouse, as if calling out to the missing keeper… or to anyone who dares to walk too close to the edge.
