Explore The Valley Of Life – Endemic Serra Malagueta Trek – Santiago

The Vale Principal Trek is a captivating route that takes you through one of Santiago Island’s most beautiful and ecologically rich landscapes — the Serra Malagueta Natural Park.

Starting from the park entrance near Curral Velho, at about 800 meters above sea level, the trail follows an old mountain path once used by farmers and traders. The route begins with gentle undulating terrain and then gradually descends along terraced fields and volcanic slopes carved by centuries of human adaptation to nature.

As you walk, you’ll pass through traditional farmlands planted with sugarcane, bananas, and maize, and you’ll meet locals who still cultivate the land using ancestral techniques. The scenery is dotted with endemic plants such as Lavandula rotundifolia, Limonium lobinii, and Conyza varia, which give the valley a unique palette of silver, green, and violet tones.

The descent offers panoramic views over deep valleys and distant peaks, as the climate gradually shifts from cool and dry to warmer and more humid. The hike ends in the peaceful village of Chão de Horta, where hikers can relax, share a traditional meal, and enjoy the authentic hospitality of Santiago’s rural communities.
